SASSA recently started with double payments for the June and July outstanding social relief grants.

Sandy Ngodlwana, SASSA spokesperson, said to avoid beneficiaries from standing in long queues or making two trips to the post office for the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant, the South African Social Security Agency are making double payments to cover the outstanding June and July social relief grants.

‘We have reconsidered applications made in May against updated databases received, an additional 1 million applicants have been approved for the grant,’ she explained.

‘This will drastically reduce the number of potential appeals, and will also mitigate the affected beneficiaries against the current impact of the lockdown.’

Payment for June and July have begun for those who submitted banking details.

Payments for those who receive their money through the post office will be done progressively throughout the month in order to limit the number of people at post offices on a daily basis.

Ngodlwana also said ‘Beneficiaries are reminded that they should only visit the post office once they have received an SMS notifying them that their money has been paid in, and is ready for collection.
